"Bacteria from the mouth can be carried through the bloodstream to internal organs and can be linked to serious and costly health conditions"
Why Dental Care Matters
✔ Prevents Pain & Infection – Gum disease leads to painful infections, tooth loss, and difficulty eating.
✔ Reduced need for extractions – Regular care reduces the need for lengthy dental surgeries to extract infected/painful teeth
✔ Protects Overall Health – Untreated dental issues can cause heart, liver, and kidney disease.
✔ Eliminates Bad Breath – Persistent bad breath is often a sign of dental problems.

Studies in 2019 and 2022 have established a significant link between periodontal (dental) disease in pets and systemic health issues, particularly affecting the heart and liver. They also noted that small breeds and older dogs are more susceptible to periodontal disease. Furthermore, it was shown that treatment of these periodontal infections was able to reduce this impact, highlighting the importance of maintaining your pet's oral hygiene to prevent not only dental issues but also potential widespread health problems.

How we manage dental disease in the clinic
Sometimes we see patients where dental disease is too advanced for brushing to be effective, and they require in-practice treatment to remove the hard mineralised material encasing the teeth hiding signs of decay. Once we have done this, at-home dental maintenance can be continued to reduce the chance of this happening again.
Here is an example of what we do at Pawvet. A short general anaesthetic allows us to use a specialist ultrasonic scaler to clean teeth above and below the gum line. The mouth is fully examined for disease before polishing with pet-friendly polish for clean healthy breath.

Can I get my pets teeth scale and polished without an anaesthetic?
We are aware that some establishments offer scaling and polishing without anaesthetic, and this is not recommended. It is not possible to scale all faces of the teeth or access below the gum line without an anaesthetic, without which the procedure is ineffective. So although these interventions can provide aesthetically pleasing results, the disease is still present and will progress to cause oral pain and infection as it has not been properly treated.
Dental Awareness Month Offer:
We are delighted to offer all Pawvet Clients free dental check ups for the month of February in practice with our experienced nursing team. On top of this, we will be deducting $50 from all dental treatments and X Rays.
